Honors Residential College

The Honors Residential College, located in Johnson Hall, is specifically for students who have been admitted to the Honors College.

Mission Statement:
The Honors Residential College is dedicated to giving Honors College students the opportunity to live and learn together in an atmosphere that is dedicated to holistic learning by engaging students in a residential environment through social and educational programs designed to promote intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and independence.

Goals:

Students who participate in the Honors Residential College will be: exposed to opportunities unique to students who strive for academic success; participate in leadership opportunities along with other top students; develop friendships through common goals, courses, and conversation; and, be exposed to faculty and staff to enhance their academic experience at Kent State University.

Benefits:

Students who participate in the Honors Residential College will have access to the Honors Center, which will house the Honors College administrative staff offices (including the dean and advisors), have the opportunity to take certain honors courses in the Honors Center, and have access to the Honors College library and computer lab.

Programs and Events:

Each year the programs and events change as the community also changes. Programs and events of the past include:
  • The Honors Luau: Held after move-in the program provided an opportunity for students to meet and interact with Honors College faculty and staff, as well as the Residence Hall staff and other Honors College students.
  • Pizza with the Profs: Pizza party with faculty to learn about the research endeavors of the Honors College faculty. Students had the opportunity to interact with lead faculty and discuss opportunities to assist in their research projects.
  • Voices from Afar: Students were given the opportunity to interact with international students from all over the world and learn about their cultures, breakdown stereotypes, and ask questions.
  • Studying Abroad: Students were given information about the many opportunities provided to KSU students in terms of studying abroad
  • Honors College Movie Night: Each Thursday, Honors College students got together and watched documentaries and films on a number of topics followed by discussion of the film's content.
  • Other past programs have included ice cream socials, political debates, students forums, and a number of other seasonal programs.
Connected Courses:

Students participating in the Honors Residential College will take Honors courses as a part of their enrollment in the Honors College.

Requirements for admission:

In order to participate in the Honors Residential College, one must be admitted to the Honors College at Kent State University. For more information about the Honors College please visit: http://www.kent.edu/honors/

How do I join?

There is no separate “community” application process for housing. Students interested in living in Johnson Hall who have been admitted to the Honors College should list Johnson Hall as their preferred hall.
