The first and foremost line of defense against spyware and viruses is to keep Windows up-to-date. Microsoft constantly releases updates to fix security vulnerabilities in Windows. Make sure to always keep your computer up-to-date by following our Windows Update instructions and checking for new updates regularly

Secondly, general knowledge of malicious websites and popups can be a valuable tool in keeping your computer free of malware. If a website looks suspicious, has tons of pop-ups, or asks you to download something you are unfamiliar with, it is better to not download anything from that website.

Last but not least, Kent State provides all students with McAfeee VirusScan Enterprise with Anti-Spyware, which will constantly scan your system for unwanted software. This is your last and best line of defense against malware.

Kent state requires that all students using the Windows operating systems be equipped with the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise upon connecting to the on-campus network. This software is free, as it is liscensed to all students through an agreement with McAfee Inc. This version of McAfee antivirus will never expire as long as the student attends Kent State University.

Through the Cisco Clean Access Agent, students will be required to keep their antivirus software and Windows up-to-date to prevent malware infections. This is important since new viruses and spyware are constantly being created.

It is important that students uninstall or disable their current antivirus software. Having multiple antivirus programs can lead to reduced system performance and stability. Students may still use their software if they so choose, but at a cost of performance. Please see our antivirus removal instructions for more help.
