Game Console Access
Game consoles can now connect to the
ResNet wired network within the campus residence halls, including the Allerton and Engleman apartments. To connect with your game console, you no longer need to register. You should be able hook up your game console and get online automatically.
Wireless Game Console Access
Please note that wireless game consoles, such as the PSP, Nintendo DS, and Wii, are unable to access the FlashZone wireless network, and therefore cannot be easily connected to the Internet on campus. USB adapters such as the
Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector should work, but ResNet will be unable to provide any technical support for their use. Alternately, Nintendo Wii users can purchase the
Wii LAN Adapter to connect their Wii to the wired network, and proceed as instructed below.
Getting Connected
Connection instructions will be different for each game console, however the basic steps will be similar. First, connect your game console to a free Ethernet port in your room. If you do not have enough free ports in your room to connect both your computer and your game device, you will need to purchase an
Ethernet switch. Note that the use of wired and wireless routers is
prohibited within the residence halls. Once you have your game console connected, make sure it is configured to
obtain an IP address automatically through DHCP,
obtain DNS automatically through DHCP, and make sure that
PPPoE is disabled. These settings should be the default on all consoles.
For more detailed information in connecting your game console, see the manufacturer's instruction page.
Connection Troubleshooting
If you have trouble getting connected with your game console, you will need to find its MAC address (also known as the "adapter" or "physical" address). This is a 12 digit alpha-numeric address that uniquely identifies the system on the network. Please see the directions below on how to find the MAC address. Once you've located your MAC address, please
give our helpdesk a call.
