CCA (Cisco Clean Access) is a system implemented in large
networks to:
-
Verify and manage the users connecting to the network
-
Keep the network secure by enforcing good security standards
All users accessing the network are required to log on using their
Flashline UserID and password. As an added benefit to Microsoft Windows users, the Cisco Clean Access Agent is required to be installed on the computer. You will be directed to download this software automatically the first time you connect your computer to the ResNet network. The Clean Access Agent will then verify that the computer is secure enough to be allowed access to the network. It
will check for the latest Windows Updates, Automatic Updates, McAfee VirusScan,
and other essential security requirements. The client will not collect any personal
information, only information regarding the security of the system. The Clean Access system greatly reduces the spread of viruses across the network and will therefore help
keep your information safe and your computing experience enjoyable.
There are a few issues related to Cisco Clean Access that you should be aware
of:
-
All Residence Hall students are required to have McAfee VirusScan, which is free
for all Kent students, installed on their Windows-based systems.
Students who currently have antivirus software from a different vender (such as
Norton, AVG, or Computer Associates) are strongly encouraged to remove their
existing antivirus software first. Please review the
Virus Information page for more details and installation instructions.
-
Cisco Clean Access eliminates the need to pre-register your computer before
arriving on campus. Students will instead be prompted to enter their FlashLine
ID and password when they first access the Internet.
-
Microsoft requires that all computers running Windows Update have valid license
keys. If you do not have a valid key, you will not be able to download
critical updates from Microsoft, and therefore will not be able to access the
Internet. Visit Microsoft's
How to Tell website to determine if your copy of Windows is valid.
-
Routers (wired or wireless) will not function properly in residence halls and are prohibited.
If you need to connect multiple computers to the network, you can now use an
inexpensive hub or switch, such as the Netgear FS605 or the
D-Link DSS-5+. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for more details.
-
Wireless access is offered in the first-floor lounges of many
residence halls. Visit our
FlashZone page for more information.
To reduce the setup time of a computer once you arrive on campus, you may want to update it before moving into the dorms. Visit the connection info page for instructions on preparing your computer.
