Our students have several means to apply for on-campus housing. The most convenient method is to utilize the electronic version of our application at www.res.kent.edu/newapp. Students may also mail the paper form of our application or they may apply in person in our office on the first floor of Korb Hall. We also accept applications by fax at 330-672-2579. There is a $25 application fee assessed at the time you apply. If you plan on applying electronically or by fax, payment is made by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.

Every room on campus is furnished with a bed, desk, and dresser for each student in addition to high-speed internet service, phone service, and cable television hook-up. The student will need to provide the necessary cables to utilize the services provided. Additionally, students should bring bath essentials, extra long twin bedding, as well as any other personal items necessary. Please remember to keep toaster-ovens, candles, indoor grills, microwaves, and torchiere-style lighting at home. For a more complete listing of items, please refer to our Hallways Manual.

The housing application provides an area to request another individual to be your roommate, suitemate, floormate, or hallmate. There is space to request up to three individuals. When filling out your application, please provide their full name and Kent State email address. Please note that housing assignments are made on a first come, first served basis. In addition to applying early, it also would be to the students’ advantage to apply together. While every effort will be made to honor your request, we cannot guarantee that your request will be filled.

Kent State University Housing policy states that all students enrolled for nine or more credit hours at the Kent campus must live in university housing until they meet one of the following conditions:
  • have attempted 60 credit hours (junior standing) prior to the start of the academic year
  • are 21 years of age prior to the start of the academic year
  • have lived in university housing for four semesters
  • will live and travel to class from the primary residence of their parent or legal guardian residing within 50 miles of the University
  • have been granted an exemption from the Department of Residence Services

If the student’s plans include commuting from home, they must submit a Commuter Exemption Application. Commuter Exemption Applications are available here. Additionally, if the student plans on living in University recognized Greek housing, the student must submit Greek exemption paperwork.

All students are eligible for a single room at Kent State University. Singles are available in Leebrick Hall, Centennial Court C, and Korb Hall. Freshmen and sophomores are welcome to reside in Leebrick Hall (floors 7-12) while students attaining junior status and beyond are eligible for Centennial Court C and Korb Hall in addition to Leebrick Hall. While all students are eligible for single housing, we urge incoming students to take part in a living community that provides a roommate. Living with peers and making connections with other students is an integral part of the holistic education our students receive at the University. For further information on these or any of our residence halls, please visit our Residence Halls page at www.res.kent.edu.

Once our students have been given an initial housing assignment, they may utilize our Room Change Online website at www.res.kent.edu/roomchange to facilitate a change. This site is live 24 hours a day until August 1, 2008. After logging in with their Flashline user name and password, students may click on a link that says “browse available rooms” to look for vacant spaces across campus. To view information about a particular room, the student may click on a link that says “info” next to the room number. This link will provide information regarding the current roommate for the room, a blueprint of the building, and the cost for the room by semester. Once they have found a room that they’d like to change to, they simply click “make this my room.” There is no charge to change rooms (though the new room may carry a different cost) and students may make changes as often as they’d like. If the student would like to make a change after the school year has started, they may contact their respective Residence Hall Director.

Many of our residence halls come equipped with a microfridge. They are provided in the following residence halls:

Allyn Hall, Verder Hall, Prentice Hall, Dunbar Hall, Centennial Court A, Centennial Court B, Centennial Court C, Centennial Court D, Centennial Court E, Centennial Court F, Clark Hall, Dunbar Hall, Fletcher Hall, Johnson Hall, Lake Hall, Manchester Hall, Olson Hall, Prentice Hall, Stopher Hall and Verder Hall.

If your residence hall is not equipped with a microfridge, you may rent one from Huskie Rentals. Their website is located at www.fridges4kentstate.com. Additionally, you may bring a small refrigerator unit that is five cubic feet or smaller.

All of our residence halls have laundry facilities located inside of the buildings. We offer laundry machines that use smart-card technology to pay for laundry use. Upon move-in, each student will receive a laundry card that can have funds added to the card at the laundry card stations at our Area Desks. The cost $2.50 to wash and drying is free. The money on the card does not expire from year to year and the machines are 20 pound capacity. The machines are front loading to be energy and water efficient. Students must provide their own soap and laundry essentials.

All of our students are more than welcome to bring their cars with them to the University. However, please note that first-year students park at Dix Stadium. For full parking details, please refer to the Parking Services website at www.kent.edu/parking.

Our flexible food plans operate on a debit system that allows our students to purchase food and food items from our cafeterias and convenience stores on campus. The food plan is accessed through the student’s Flashcard. When purchasing food, the student simply hands their card to the cashier or will swipe their own card at an electronic kiosk. The student is given a receipt for the purchase that also includes the balance of their food plan. For full details surrounding food plans, dining options, and our dining facilities, please visit the Dining Services website at www.dining.kent.edu.

Resident Assistants are valuable leaders that provide a great service to our residents. Information about the wonderful benefits and responsibilities of being an RA, as well as an application, is located at the Resident Assistant home page.
