| Energy Waste: Watt’s Up With That?
|
|
| Welcome to October, energy awareness month! The US Department of Energy has dedicated the month of October to the promotion of awareness of the numerous steps we can each take to save energy. |
| The Department of Residence Services is asking students to partner with us to help reduce the amount of energy consumed throughout our residence halls. Along with the steps that the department has made to reduce energy used in the halls, such as replacing incandescent light bulbs, we are kicking off an Energy Competition in October. This competition will run from October 1st through October 31st. The teams are listed below. To help keep the students informed of the standings, there will be one midway point reading done on October 15th. This reading will provide students two weeks to change the outcome. Last year the competition brought an overall 8.3% reduction of energy consumption throughout all of the halls. That was just one month! Imagine what we could accomplish if after the competition we continued our efforts.

Be on the lookout for bulletin boards in the Residence Halls put up by your Resident Assistants regarding energy conservation.
The cost of my room or apartment is fixed. Why should I care about conserving energy?
While the cost of your room is not adjusted while you are living in your room, the yearly rates that are set for the residence halls are based partially on the expenses it takes to heat, cool, furnish with water, provide electricity, etc. By helping to lower the overall energy cost, the savings can be placed back into the pockets of our students, all the while actively preserving our environment.
